November 7, 2014 Bespoke Commission
14k yellow gold and diamond Polus Necklace heading to the client in time to make its debut this holiday party season!
This bespoke commission was a collaboration between myself and my client (who also happens to be a very dear friend). She came to me having a vague idea of what she wanted: a beautiful, yet understated everyday-wearable gold necklace with just a hint of shine. We worked together from there, her explaining what she envisioned while I sketched in my notebook. Once the design had been perfected I took my drawings to the bench and began working on the final piece. The best projects always start with a vague idea and a good cup of coffee! If you have a bespoke creation in mind and would like to set up an in person or online consultation please email me via the contact page.

July 15, 2014 Think green.
Rich greens against matte charcoal remind me of moss covered boulders and lush jungle floors. I rarely add green to my color palette, but after making a bespoke emerald engagement ring I think I'm hooked.
July 11, 2014 Bespoke Engagement Ring.
So excited to finally show off this bespoke engagement ring! 14k gold, emeralds and clients own 2ct rough diamond.
April 12, 2014 Britlyn Simone on the Pieces of Eight Blog again!

Looking through proofs for the new collection from our photo shoot last weekend. Many great shots to come!
April 4, 2014 Adventures Unknown.
Had a hard time parting with this necklace. The beauty of being a maker is the ability to let what you have created continue on its journey without you.
March 25, 2014 At the bench.
A well loved solder board. Taking a moment to appreciate the residual marks and colors created from hours spent at the bench. Lots of new pieces have been created in this tiny space and I'm looking forward to previewing them in the coming weeks!
February 22, 2014 Flirting with Spring.
Inspired by the beautiful weather today, I bought some flowers, dusted off the camera and had an impromptu photo shoot.
February 4, 2014 A visit from Saint Valentine.
Faceted and rough garnets caught in a little patch of sunlight on the
bench this morning. I think St. Valentine may be up to something.
January 18, 2014 A tangle of earrings on the work bench today.
Can you spot the new designs? Finished photos coming soon!
January 1, 2014 Hello Twenty Fourteen!

December 20, 2013 More Thoughts on Contemporary Jewellery:
Damian Skinner has written an interesting article on the differences and similarities of the world of contemporary jewellery vs luxury fine jewellery.
"Sometimes I find myself wondering if I should escape the airless world of contemporary jewelry in favor of the much larger, better-funded jewelry world that Vanity Fair On Jewellery represents. The thing that keeps me on this side of the fence is the critical potential of the contemporary jewelry object. Sure, diamonds might be out in the world being exchanged and worn and valued in a way that contemporary jewelry can only dream about, but in the end, these diamonds are not reflexive in themselves about their historical links or how they are being used and valued. The objects and their makers aren’t engaged with making the potential of jewelry part of their subject matter in the same way as happens frequently in the contemporary jewelry field. I like cerebral bling, loaded with conceptual carats."

December 17, 2013 Britlyn Simone featured on the Pieces of Eight Blog today!
I am influenced by the geometry of every day life, from the beautiful symmetry in nature, to the modern industrial landscape. For me, jewellery is a vessel that unifies personal narrative and material exploration, creating objects that have both history and memory.

August 29, 2013 Thoughts on Contemporary Jewellery:
Here is an excerpt from an article in The Age interviewing Nina Cueva of COTA on the subject of contemporary jewellery. "Contemporary jewellery is difficult to put a monetary value on. Unlike traditional jewellery, such as a diamond ring or solid gold necklace, the value of contemporary jewellery lies in the idea and the process. Certainly the materials used can fit into the equation, but a contemporary brooch made from resin or a necklace made from volcanic stone can be more valuable than a diamond ring.
"The amount of time involved, the process, as well as materials do come into play. But you need to understand the position of a certain contemporary jeweller. Are they collected by galleries and museums? When did they produce this work and how does it fit into the context of their careers?" says Nina Cueva, who operates COTA Gallery (Courtesy of the Artist) in Sydney with her partner, contemporary jeweller Cesar Cueva."

July 17, 2013 Gem Daydreams
I find myself getting
lost in the beautiful colors and natural patterns of gemstones. It is quite amazing
what can be created with a bit of time, pressure and patience.
Just the other day I stumbled upon an interesting article in the NY Times by Carl Zimmer titled In Glittering Gems, Reading Earth's Story. It's a fascinating short read that I would recommend if you are interested in the history of these shining beauties.
